There is a moment every angler knows. You have a good fish on the mat, the hook is out, the clock is running on its time out of the water — and there is no scale in the boat, or the fish is plainly going straight back and you would never dream of hanging it from a hook by the jaw. You want a number anyway. How big was that fish? The good news is that you can get a genuinely reliable answer with nothing but a tape measure, because the relationship between a fish’s length, its girth, and its weight is one of the most studied patterns in fisheries science. This calculator turns those measurements into pounds using the very formulas published by state fish-and-wildlife agencies, and the sections below explain what is actually going on so you can trust — and sanity-check — the result.

Why length predicts weight at all

Picture two fish of the same species shaped the same way, one exactly twice as long as the other. The longer fish is not just twice as big. It is twice as long, roughly twice as tall, and twice as wide — so it contains about eight times the volume, and because flesh has a fairly constant density, about eight times the weight. That is the heart of it: weight grows with the cube of length. Double the length, eight-fold the weight; add just 20% to the length and you add roughly 70% to the weight. It is why a 22-inch walleye feels so much heavier than a 19-inch one, and why the last couple of inches on a trophy matter far more than the first few.

Biologists write this as a length–weight relationship, and for a given species in good condition it is remarkably consistent. That consistency is what lets a tape measure stand in for a scale.

The two formulas — and when to use each

This tool carries two methods. The first uses length alone; the second adds girth and is meaningfully more accurate. Both are honest estimates, but they answer slightly different questions.

Length only: the quick estimate

When all you have is a length, the calculator cubes it and divides by a number specific to the species — its “shape factor.”

Length-only formula

Weight (lb) = Length³ ÷ species shape factor

e.g. a 20-in largemouth bass → 20³ ÷ 1,700 ≈ 4.7 lb

The shape factor is what makes a long, lean pike weigh less than a deep, slab-sided bass of the very same length. A bigger divisor means a more slender fish. Length-only is perfect for a fast field guess, but it assumes the fish is of average build — and a fish gorged on bait or swollen with eggs is anything but average.

Length and girth: the accurate estimate

The moment you add a girth — the distance around the fish at its fattest point — you stop assuming how heavy the fish is and start measuring it. Two bass can both be 20 inches long while one is a post-spawn rail and the other a pre-spawn brute; their girths tell those two fish apart, and so does this formula.

Weight (lb) = (Girth² × Length) ÷ 800

Girth and length in inches. 800 is the standard divisor for average-bodied fish; the calculator shifts to 700 for deep-bodied catfish and 900 for slender pike and musky.

Notice that the girth is squaredwhile length is not. That is deliberate: girth is a stand-in for the cross-sectional area of the fish, and area grows with the square of a circumference. The formula is, in effect, treating the fish as a cylinder — length times cross-section — which is a far better model of a real fish than length alone. The figure of 800 traces back to Texas Parks & Wildlife and is used, in one form or another, by fisheries departments across the country. Plug a 26-inch bass with a 20¼-inch girth into it and you get 13.3 pounds — which is exactly the number Texas publishes for that fish.

How to measure so the number means something

The math is only as good as the tape work. A few seconds of care here is the difference between a figure you can stand behind and a wild guess.

  • Measure total length. Lay the fish flat on a measuring board or tape, close its mouth, and read from the tip of the snout to the very end of the tail. If you pinch the tail fin to its longest point you will get total length, the figure these formulas expect. (Fork length, taken to the notch of the tail, runs a touch shorter — be consistent.)
  • Take girth at the widest point. Slip a soft tape or a length of line around the body at its deepest, fattest spot — usually just ahead of the dorsal fin — and read the circumference. A piece of mono laid against your tape works in a pinch.
  • Keep the fish calm, flat, and wet. A fish arched or held up by the jaw measures short. Support it horizontally, work quickly, and get your reading before it starts to thrash.

How to use the calculator

  1. Pick the species. This sets the shape factor, so a pike and a bluegill of the same length return very different weights.
  2. Enter the length in inches. You will get an immediate length-only estimate.
  3. If you have it, add the girth. The readout switches to the more accurate length-girth formula, and the schematic draws in the girth band so you can see which measurement is doing the work.
  4. Read the weight in pounds, with a pounds-and-ounces and kilogram breakdown beneath it, and the live formula showing exactly how the number was reached.

Why species shape matters so much

A formula tuned for a largemouth will badly misjudge a northern pike, because the two fish are built nothing alike. Pike and musky are long and tubular — a lot of length wrapped around relatively little mass — so they need a larger divisor or the math will overweight them. Catfish run the other way: heavy, round, deep through the body, so they take a smaller divisor. Panfish like bluegill and crappie are short and deep, almost dinner-plate round, and have their own factors entirely. Choosing the right species is not a cosmetic setting; it is the single biggest lever on accuracy after girth.

Just how accurate is this?

Honest answer: very good for a tape measure, and not a substitute for a certified scale. Expect a well-measured length-girth estimate to land within roughly 10–15% of the true weight. Real fish vary in condition through the year — fat in fall, lean after the spawn, briefly heavier when stuffed with bait or eggs — and a fixed formula cannot know which fish it is looking at. The length-only number drifts a little more, especially at the extremes of size, because it has to assume average build. Use these estimates for the things they are great at: logging catches, settling a friendly “how big do you think?”, deciding whether a tournament fish is worth keeping. For an official record, there is no shortcut — the fish has to go on a certified scale, witnessed, by the book.

Big toothy fish are exactly the ones you least want to manhandle onto a scale and exactly the ones whose long, slender build fools a length-only guess. This is where girth and the right species factor pay off most — a fat 40-inch musky and a snaky one weigh worlds apart, and only the girth tells you which you caught.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring a bent or jaw-held fish. It reads short and underweights the estimate — lay it flat.
  • Skipping girth on a fat fish. Length-only assumes average build and will undersell a heavy, well-fed fish.
  • Using the wrong species. A pike weighed as a bass comes out far too heavy. Match the shape.
  • Mixing fork and total length. Pick one — total length — and use it every time.
  • Treating the result as official. It is a close estimate; records need a certified scale.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need the girth?

No — length alone gives a solid ballpark. But girth is what separates a fat fish from a thin one of the same length, so it is the single best thing you can add for accuracy. On a notably chunky or skinny fish, measure it.

Why is my length-only number different from the length-girth one?

Because they are answering different questions. Length-only assumes an average-build fish of that species; length-girth measures the actual fish in front of you. When the two disagree, the fish is fatter or leaner than average, and the girth number is the one to trust.

Can I measure in centimeters?

These particular formulas expect inches and return pounds. Measure in inches, or convert first. The readout also shows the result in kilograms for convenience.

Is the estimate good enough for a tournament?

For your own cull decisions on the water, easily. For anything that goes in the record books or the official standings, no — those require a certified, witnessed scale.
